South Quay, Great Yarmouth

Image
"Lydia Eva" Moored at South Quay Watercolour 28 x 38cm (Sold) The Lydia Eva is a preserved steam drifter, the last remaining example of the huge fleet that was based in Great Yarmouth. In the port's fishing heyday, there could be as many as 1,000 vessels moored along and right across the river.

Brancaster Staithe

Image
The Blue Dinghy, Brancaster Staithe Watercolour 56 x 76cm, 2016 (Sold) I have been following the fortunes of the mussel boats (and their users!) at Brancaster staithe for 10-15 years. Sadly, their numbers are gradually declining, as they get older and beyond economical restoration. This painting is one of my submissions for the annual exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (R.I.) for 2017. The exhibition will be at The Mall Galleries, London, opening on 6th April.

LT 336 on Aldeburgh Beach

Image
LT336 On Aldeburgh Beach Watercolour 38 x 56cm (Sold) There are several wooden boats on Aldeburgh beach, but most of them are no longer seaworthy. They are painted and maintained by Mr Alan Burrell, who is thus preserving some of the town's heritage. There are one or two exceptions, such as the boat seen here, which is still in regular use. This painting was shown in the R.I. annual exhibition in 2015, at The Mall Galleries, London, together with the Ibizan fishing boat shown lower down.
